Feng Shui and NumerologyAncient Chinese believed numerology was the means that heaven communicated with humankind on earth, and used the numeric information derived from observing the celestial universe to improve their well-being and wellness. This astute knowledge of the cosmos evolved into a school of thought called Flying Star Feng Shui School.
Flying Star analysis uses mysterious numerals correlated to the five phases and eight trigrams to discern what the number combinations mean and how you can remedy or enhance the Chi in a particular area to facilitate favorable occurences and avoid or minimise the impact of unfavorable ones. Both the Luo Shu and He Tu describe patterns of Qi, and help us to understand how Chi works, especially in relation to time ( Luo Shu ). |
Luo Shu
The Luo Shu has numeral "9" at the top of the chart, which corresponds to the direction of south, and is associated with the Fire Element. "2" is in the southwest, and is associated with the Earth Element. "7" associated with the Metal Element is in the west. "6" is also associated with the Metal Element, but takes up the northwest box of the chart. "5" associated with the Earth Element occupies the centre. "1" ( Water Element ) is in the north box. "4" and "3" both associated with the Wood Element are placed in the southeast and east respectively. Finally, "8" associated with the Earth Element is in the northeast.

Some feng shui practitioners use the Luo Shu grid to look for imbalances between the Five Phases ( or 5 Elements ) of a house by placing it over its floor plan. If the house has a missing space/corner in the north box of the chart, it is deemed to have a lack of the Water Element. This points to possible trouble with intelligence, emotions or kidneys of the occupants.

Another application would be to compare the shapes of a building located in various directions with the Phases ( or elements ) associated with those directions.
For example, a building with a dome-shaped ( shape of Metal Element ) roof located in the East has a Metal Element association which destroys the Wood Element associated with that direction on the Luo Shu. This could indicate problems with growth or kindness, both of which are associated with the Wood Element. |
He Tu
The He Tu shows a perfect balance of Yin and Yang. Numeral 2 and 7 are paired together, and both represent Fire Element and the south direction; 1 and 6 represent Water Element and the north direction; 3 and 8 represent Wood Element and the east direction; 4 and 9 represent Metal Element and the west direction; and 5 and 10 represent Earth Element and the centre. Unlike the Luo Shu, there is no movement, no change and no passage of time in the He Tu.
