Combination of Earthly BranchesIn Chinese astrology, the year is divided into 4 seasons ( Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter ) which are further broken down into 3 Earthly Branches for each season ( 3 months ).
Each Earthly Branch represents one of the 12 months in the year, and is associated with one of the 12 animal signs, the 5 elements and the polarity of Yin and Yang. Together, they give meaning to the forces that shape one's destiny. |
Compatibility ?

Three Harmony CombinationsThese indicate the compatibility between two Heavenly Stems or two Earthly Branches.
An Earthly Branches Combination refers to the union or affiliation between two Earthly Branches. It has a stronger effect than a Heavenly Stems combination, and is derived from astrological phenomenon that indicates a strong union, link, bond, or connection between objects or relationships represented by the 4 Elements ( Water, Fire, Metal and Wood ) involved. The combination empowers one of the Five Elements in the Bazi chart to become the dominant Element in the Bazi chart. If the combination is favourable to the Day Master, the person is said to have a special connection or link to high status individuals. If the combination is not favourable, it can mean the opposite such as when Water Element (Monkey, Rat, and Dragon) is found in a Bazi chart with a Fire Element for the Day of birth. The combination is not favourable as Water is a negative element for Fire. If the Metal combination is found in this chart, however, it will be fantastic since Metal is the wealth element of a Fire Day Master. The 12 earthly branches are grouped under 3 so-called Harmony Combinations, and 4 Element Structures for such analysis: Water Structure
Wood Structure
Fire Structure
Metal Structure
The middle earthly branch within each Harmony Combination determines the Element Structure of the combination. |
Directional CombinationsIt is present when all the Earthly Branches from a season are present in a Bazi chart. Similar to the Three Harmony combination, having this type of combination in a chart can be favorable or unfavorable. The combination produces one strong and dominant element in the chart:
Spring
Summer
Autumn
Winter
Take note that the last earthly branch within each combination belongs to the Earth Element, while the other two belong to the same Element that determines the season. Summer ( Hot ) is compatible with the Fire Element of both Snake and Horse. |
Annual pillars can strengthen or weaken) the energies of the 10-year luck pillars.
|
Six Harmony CombinationsThe Six Harmony Combinations, also known as the Internal Combinations, come about during a 10-year cycle ( Luck Pillars ) or during a particular year ( Annual Pillars). Each combination transforms into another element, which may enhance or weaken a chart:
|
Combination of Heavenly StemsThe combinations represent relationships, meetings, and partnerships. They represent only the prevailing Qi, and are usually not long lasting. Superficial in nature and, therefore weak, unless they are rooted ( when the same element and same Yin or Yang polarity are found on the stems - only the Day Master needs to be rooted ):

Planets
According to Chinese Astrology, the 5 classical planets associated with the 5 Elements or Wu Xing are:
The Earth and five planets will return to their original positions in their movement around the Sun every 60 years, which led to the establishment of the 60-year cycle ( Jia Zi ).
A person's destiny can be determined by the positions of the major planets at the time of the person's birth along with the positions of the Sun, Moon and comets, and Chinese Zodiac Sign. The twelve-year cycle of Chinese Zodiac signs was built from observations of the orbit of the Year Star, Jupiter (Simplified Chinese: 岁星; traditional Chinese: 歳星; pinyin: Suìxīng). The orbit of Jupiter around the Sun is equivalent to 12 orbits of the Earth's. Chinese astronomers divided the orbit of Jupiter around the sun ( also known as the celestial circle ) into 12 sections, and rounded up the duration of the orbit from 11.86 years to 12 years. Jupiter is associated with the constellation Sheti ( Simplified Chinese: 摄提; traditional Chinese: 攝提 ).
Computing a person's destiny based on one's birthday, birth season, and birth hours, is popularly known as Zi Wei Dou Shu ( Simplified Chinese: 紫微斗数; traditional Chinese: 紫微斗數; pinyin: zǐwēidǒushù ). The 28 Chinese constellations, Xiu ( 宿 ), are quite different from the 88 Western constellations. For example, the Big Bear ( Ursa Major ) is known as Dou ( 斗 ); the belt of Orion is known as Shen (Simplified Chinese: 参; traditional Chinese: 參 ), or the "Happiness, Fortune, Longevity" trio of demigods. The seven northern constellations are referred to as Xuan Wu ( 玄武 ) or the Spirit of the Northern Sky or the Spirit of Water in Taoism.
- Venus - Metal (White Tiger);
- Jupiter - Wood (Azure Dragon);
- Mercury - Water (Black Tortoise);
- Mars - Fire (Vermilion Bird which may or may not be associated with the phoenix which was also an imperial symbol along with the dragon); and
- Saturn - Earth (Yellow Dragon)

The year pillar has implications on the grandparents while the month pillar has implications on the parents. When there is a clash, the relationships of the person with parents and grandparents are damaged ( 缘份薄 ).
