Ba Gua Branch
Ba Gua AreasThe term, ba gua, is literally derived from the traditional chinese description of an eight-sided figure with ‘ba’ meaning eight and ‘gua’ meaning sector or area. Traditionally, it was referred to as the Pa kua.
|
The eight-sided ba gua has nine equal areas which could also be re-positioned to form the Lo Shu Square for feng shui analysis and cure. The 9 ba gua areas or 9 squares of Lo Shu Square serve as a map of vital energies ( see below example ) located within any given space such as bedroom, garden, desktop, plot of land or even a bookshelf. A good understanding of which area to enhance or play down the energy will improve the various aspects of life of the occupants.
|
Once the ba gua areas of your house are mapped out, a feng shui consultant is able to advise on what’s happening or could possibly happen in different aspects of your life based on current circumstances so that you can make changes, if necessary.
Some practitioners are of the view that the ' western ba gua ' ( see diagram on the right ) as conceptualized by His Holiness Grandmaster Lin Yun of the Black Sect Tantric Buddhist Sect is too simplistic, and not in line with chinese traditional feng shui philosophy. It disregards the pivotal facing of the door of each house and ba gua of the occupiers being audited for good feng shui. The Ba Gua Map of the whole house is referred to as the ' Big Tai Chi ' whereas the map for the room is the so-called ' Small Tai Chi '. |
Master Ba Gua Map
Draw out the ba gua map with the areas 8, 1 and 6 are at the bottom of the map, that is the bottom three squares of the Lo Shu Square.
Each ba gua area is associated with one of the five elements ( Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water ). Compile a multi-layered ba gua which incorporates the relevant element, gua numbers, colours representing the element, and other effective feng shui cures. |
The directions of the ba gua areas can be superimposed once the house facing or sitting is determined. Likewise, the annual stars.
This serves as a masterpiece for periodic reference whenever there is a need for renovation, addition of decors, etc. |
House Sitting Position
Some classical feng shui school uses The Eight Mansions system to calculate your house gua to identify auspicious directions within your home:
|
Each number in the chart ( also known as the Xuan Kong Da Gua ) is the Gua which represents both time and direction. For instance, ' 2 ' at the top right-hand corner is the Kun Gua; and refers to the period, 1884 to 1903.

Life Areas or Aspirations

CreativityThe feng shui element of the West ba gua area is Metal, but Earth Element is also very good in the West as the Earth Element creates/nourishes Metal.

Missing Sectors and ImplicationsEvery sector represents a certain Element, a certain part of the body, and a certain member of the household. A missing sector will affect the person associated with that person severely, and the general health condition of the other occupants.

Other Considerations
Luan Tao vs Li ChiTwo important aspects, namely luan tao and li chi may have to be considered in feng shui audit. Luan tao refers to the external environment and the internal layout of the house, including furniture arrangement. Li chi refers to the chi flows in the house, and it has different interpretations from various schools of feng shui.
|
Personally, luan tao is more important as it likely to affect the li chi. For instance, if the luan tao is not favourable like placing the bed at an angle without solid support, it will still affect the feng shui of the bed placement even though the occupant will be sleeping with his head facing the auspicious direction.
