Flying Stars, Yearly Afflictions & Star ChartThe star chart of a house or building is drawn up based on date of construction (disputable), annual locations of flying stars, and other yearly afflictions from the universe. As such, it comprises the Earth Chart and Heaven Chart.
|
Earth Chart ( Di Pan )The annual stars are also known as flying stars as they change their locations every year. The movement of annual stars has been well-studied by Feng Shui Grandmasters of many thousands of years. The ancient wisdom of the Luo Shu Square is testimony of their great efforts. It is also known as Magic Square or Earth Chart ( Di Pan ).
|
The 9 numerals of the Luo Shu Square are associated with the nine flying stars.
Years of research and study have shown that the stars/numerals always move in a specific pattern. Practitioners used the pattern for their annual and monthly Feng Shui calculations. The centre numeral refers to the Age when the construction of the house / building was completed, in this case Year 1944 - 1963 ( see picture ). |
Each star has a certain quality of energy ( for example, the Star of Wealth and Star of Romance ). Each star is also linked to one of the Five Elements ( Metal, Earth, Water, Fire or Wood ).
The 20-year chart remains valid until the house / building is next renovated or rebuilt. But when the stars change positions, the feng shui of the house / building will likewise change accordingly. Yearly or even monthly charts are necessary to reflect the possible changes in feng shui. |
For the current period, Period 8 (Year 2004–2023) of the time cycle, stars Eight, Nine and One are regarded as timely; and, therefore, positive for the home or office. Star Eight is often recognised as the Prosperous and Noble Star, while Star Nine and Star One bring Sheng Qi or growing positive energy. The other six stars - Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, and Seven are regarded as untimely for their retreating, killing or dead Qi.
|
Heaven Chart ( Tian Pan )Contrary to Earth Chart, Heaven Chart reflects the influences of various celestial bodies on the earth at specific time. It depicts the influencing Qi or Chi coming from the universe due to different alignment of stars and galaxies at a particular point in time ( Right picture : Dotted lines show the moving directions of the stars ).
|
Two key features of a house or building's Feng Shui:
- Mountain Star also known as Sitting Star ( Zhou Xing ). - Water Star also known as Facing Star ( Xiang Xing ) or Directional Star. |
The Mountain Star denotes where the house / building is sitting on ( for instance, sitting West facing East). According to the Flying Star Theory a house / building should have some kind of backing, support or large mass at its rear in order that its Mountain Star can be activated.
|
The Water Star denotes the facing of the house / building, and accordingly the area should be a large open space. In order to activate it, a pool of water is needed such as a pond, fish tank and the likes.

The 9 Flying Stars
There are 9 mystical annual stars, five beneficial ( representing 1 or Water, 4 or Wood, 6 or Metal, 8 or Earth, and 9 or Fire) and 4 challenging ( 5 or Yellow, 7 or Metal, 2 or Black, 3 or Wood). These are not physical stars in the sky. Instead, they are the Gua Qi or Qi ( energy ) of the trigrams used in Feng Shui study.
|
Flying star 1 一白
|
Flying star 2 二黑 or Two Black Star 黑星 ( Element: Earth )This is the second most-feared star ( sickness ), and bad effects include Cancer and demons.
|
Some practitioners suggest using the similar cure for 5 Yellow flying star by displaying 6 Ching Dynasty's bronze coins, 8 pieces of white jade or bronze gourd 葫芦.
|
Flying Star 3 碧星 (Bì xīng) or 三碧 ( Element: Wood )
|
It damages one's status in society through Slander, Libel, Defamation and the likes.
Bad effects include unnecessary lawsuits, disharmony with family members and business associates. Some practitioners suggest introducing a small red light to ward off the negative effects. |
Flying star 4 四绿
|
Five Yellow Star 五黄星 or 廉贞 阳土 ( Element: Earth )This is regarded by practitioners as the worst flying star to be mindful of.
Bad effects include misfortune, divorce, stress, death, imprisonment, disability, and sickness. Some practitioners recommend cures such as displaying 6 Ching Dynasty's bronze coins, and 8 pieces of white round jade or salt water to ward off adversity. |
6 is symbolic to Qian Gua 乾卦. The Metal Element dilutes the Earth Element of the Five Yellow flying star, and mitigates its bad effects.
Similarly, 8 is symbolic to Gen Gua 艮卦 which is associated with the son, and the most auspicious Element during the 8th Period. |
Flying star 6 六白
|
Flying star 7 七赤
|
Flying star 8 八白
|
Flying star 9 九紫
|
In EssenceBasically, there is no absolute good or bad flying star as it all depends on the governing period. Ruling star is the most auspicious while the forthcoming star is considered to be the next most auspicious. The star that has just been rendered obsolete due to the change of luck period is the most vicious.
Generally 1, 4, 6, 8 are desirable regardless of the period. |
Other Yearly Afflictions
San Sha 三煞
San Sha is in South Sector 三煞在南 for Monkey ( 申 ), Rat ( 子 ) and Dragon ( 辰 ) Year;
San Sha is in West Sector 三煞在西 for Pig ( 亥 ), Rabbit ( 卯 ) and Goat ( 未 ) Year; San Sha is in North Sector 三煞在北 for Tiger ( 寅 ), Horse ( 午 ) and Dog ( 戌 ) Year; and San Sha is in East Sector 三煞在東 for Snake ( 巳 ), Rooster ( 酉 ) and Ox ( 丑 ) Year. |
Incidentally, the notion of San Sha originates from San He School of Feng Shui, which can be further categorised as Spatial San Sha and Tong-Shu ( Chinese Almanac ) San Sha.
Spatial San Sha focuses on the fact that if one is going to carry out renovation or construction work, the sitting direction of the house should avoid having conflict with the annual San Sha. Tong-Shu San Sha refers to auspicious date selection, and the date selected for the purpose of Feng Shui activities should not be in conflict with the Month's Earthly Branch. |
Spatial San Sha covers 3 mountains on the Luo Pan ( Feng Shui Compass ):
As an example, if one's house is sitting in the East sector, then one should not carry out renovation work during the Si, You or Chou year. |
Bad effects of San Sha include accidents, loss of money, bad luck, and/or poor health.
Some masters suggest displaying 3 Unicorns or Qi Ling 麒麟 on the bad sector, and facing them towards the San Sha direction to dilute the negative energy. Others suggest using the Trilogy Theory to ward off adversity. |
Tai Sui 太岁
Clash with Tai Sui refers to planet Jupiter adversely affecting a certain group of people when the Earthly Root in their year of birth clashes with the star. Misfortune, loss, emotional unrest, and lawsuit may arise as a result of the clash. The belief was observed from the Zhou to Han dynasties, and is widely feared by many, especially Taoist followers to this day.
The clash may be classified as 犯太岁( Conflicts and fights )、刑太岁 ( Conflicts and fights )、冲太岁 (Troubles and failures )、破太岁( Carelessness and mistakes )、and 害太岁 (Disharmony with others ). |
We are fully aware of some practitioners' strong objection on the use of cures to ward off negative energy.
We do not wish to take a stand on their relevance, and decided to share them with you for your own judgement. |
There are sixty Tai Sui ( 12 Earthly Roots or Zodiac Animals X 5 Elements for each Earth Root or Zodiac Animal). They are represented by 60 Heavenly Generals believed to be assisting the Jade Emperor in taking charge of the well-being of the Mortal World.
They are popularly referred to as the Cycle Gods as each one of them takes turn to be in-charge for a year. As most of them had some military background, they are also referred to as the Military Generals. Their features and weapons augur the well-being for that particular year. If the Tai Sui of the year holds a pen, it signifies political unrest for that particular year. On the other hand, if the Tai Sui holds a spear or sword it signifies the need to work hard and excel for that year. |
The area of the house falling within the sector of a particular year's Tai Sui has to be left undisturbed or misfortune will befall the residence.
Some masters suggest using one's birth profile trilogy or duology favourable element to ward off the bad effects. Others suggest displaying a Dragon Tortoise against any negative Chi from on-going construction work, if any, located in the direction of Tai Sui to ward off adversity. |
Understanding the star trigrams and their characteristics will give you more insight as to which element to use at the appropriate time and space. Some practitioners are of the view that annual flying stars are only guest stars, and they have to interact with the existing host stars (sitting and facing stars) at the sectors in order to be effective. Their effects also vary according to different circumstances.
|
There are eight trigrams and each represents real and abstract things. The ancient sage Fu Xi classified objects according to the eight trigrams. Feng Shui masters in the past analyzed qi using the transformation of the trigrams. Cures are also based on the relationship between the trigrams, and not just on the five elements.
Chinese vs Western ZodiacsWestern astrology has 12 Zodiacs evenly distributed over a sidereal year. A sidereal year is the time it takes for the sun to return to the same position with respect to the stars. This is equivalent to 30 degrees for each Zodiac on the ecliptic plane of the Sun.
Although the Chinese concept of 28 constellations is broadly similar to the Western Zodiacs, there are differences: |

As the time of occurrence of seasons can change due to precession, it will be interesting to compare Luo Pans from different eras to study the effect of precession over the years.
